Applying the Stain

After sanding has been completed it is time to apply the stain to give the wood the desired color. Stain can be oil based water based, oil based being the most common. In this case we are using an oil based stain by Minwax, the color is Dark Walnut. Stains can be brushed, wiped or even sprayed on. As you can see I am using a sprayer to apply the stain. It has turned out be a very fast and effective method.

When using an oil based stain you need to make sure that the area is well ventilated. The carcasses are sitting on dollies which make them easy to move around to work on, but it makes the bookcase to tall to roll through the door, so they will be stained inside the shop with the window and doors open and a couple of fans moving the air.

The smaller pieces are carried outside where they are will ventilated.

Once we get our safety gear on it is time to start spraying.

These are a few pictures of the stain being applied to the carcass.

Here the stain is being applied to the shelves, doors, and tambour door.
