Fluting the Face Frame Stiles
The upper portion of the face frame on each side has three grooves. These are also know as “flutes”.
This is one of the pieces being held in a jig a made up to hold the pieces while I did the fluting.
Because the face frame stile is only 2 1/4 inches wide I had to build a jig to hold the piece trim while I ran the Fluting Jig up and down the piece to create the flutes.
I am using a plunge router attached to a Fluting Jig that allows you to adjust the location of each flute. This jig is then slid back and forth along the board to make a flute.
After making a flute, I adjust the jig to the location of the second flute and lower the router, hence the need for a plunge router.
There are stops at each end of the jig that holds the stile. Once you have lowered the router it runs along the jig from one stop to the other.
You will also notice the black hose attached to the router. This is a vacuum hose which allows us to do this work inside without creating a lot of dust or having wood chips flying.
On the right is one of the stiles in which the three flutes are routered.
Shelley even got her hand in on the work and did the fluting in over half of the stiles.
